
Join a Hardy Girls Coalition
Coalition groups in Piscataquis and Washington Counties are working to implement Hardy Girls programs in their areas, including film series, Girls Coalition Groups, and Adventure Girls programs. Learn more about these groups at the Piscataquis County and Washington County webpages.
Groups are also forming in Aroostook and Somerset Counties. For more information about the work being done in these counties, or to join a coalition, contact Gillian Bower.
Girls Membership Program Launched
Every girl everywhere can now join the Hardy Girls community through our new girls membership program.
Members will be kept up-to-date on all Hardy Girls projects and programming and receive a free subscription to G-WAVE - a 'zine created by girls for girls! Check out a sample of our last edition by clicking here!

Volunteer with Hardy Girls as a Muse
Have you ever thought about working with youth in the Greater Waterville
community? Want to put theory into practice and gain practical skills
facilitating groups with girls? Hardy Girls Healthy Women is looking for
female students who are interested in working with elementary and middle
school girls (5th-8th grade) to help them develop media literacy skills,
practice social action and develop a sense of empowerment through connection
with other girls. All those interested are encouraged to follow the link
listed below for a full description of the position and submit the
application attached to that description. All accepted applicants will be
trained in girls' development and group facilitation, how to be a "muse" to
girls (versus being a mentor) and how to create a safe space or hardiness
zone.

Hardy Girls is an American Psychology Association National Resource for Girls!
The American Psychological Association Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls cites Hardy Girls Healthy Women as a "National Media Literacy Resource," along with other great organizations doing media literacy work all over the country! The APA report notes that parents and girls can work for change, and our efforts to empower girls to challenge norms earned us this recognition. We are so happy to share this news with you!

Requirements: No experience is necessary. Applicants must be within the grades of 8th and 12th, be able to work cooperatively as part of a team, and be committed to the group with general interest in the mission and vision of Hardy Girls Healthy Women.

Adventure Girls Has a New Season
Adventure Girls has expanded its program this season to offer you 4 addtional events to bring you more opportunities to meet amazing women of daring! The first four events are:
January 10: The Snow House that Jane Built
Become your very own professional architect by learning how to build your very own snow house! How does a snow house stay warm? How do you keep it from caving in? For shelter or for fun we'll join Vice-Principle Kristin Gilbert to learn how to build an igloo. Location: Waterville Junior High School, 100 West River Rd. Waterville
January 18: Power Paddles
Ever thought about kayaking? Meet kayakers Dana and Murielle Dibiase of the Penobscot Paddle and Chowder Society and learn basic paddle techniques as well as how to properly flip over in your kayak! Location: Alfond Youth Center, 126 North St. Waterville
February 7: Chemistry Commotion
Calling all future chemists! If you missed it the first time, this event is back by popular demand! Dexter, make room in your laboratory because here comes Chemist and Colby Professor Lisa Miller. Lisa will show us the power of chemical reactions as well as have some fun making ice cream in the lab. Location: Keyes Building, Colby College-- Mayflower Hill, Waterville

March 14 These Snowshoes Were Made for Trekking!
DHiking is not only for the warmer months. Trekking through snow can be just as much fun, if not more! Meet Ann Grant, spontaneous snowshoer, as we hike along the Kennebec River. Location: Messalonskee Trails, Oakland Town Office, Upper Kennedy Memorial Dr.
March 28 and April 4 Women Who Weld
What's a job that's fun, makes a lot of money, and lets you travel? Meet Edie Bentinnen of D&E Metalworks to learn the art of using a torch to make everything from sculptures to fences. Location D&E Metalworks, 1270 Rome Rd. Mercer
April 11: Lumber Jane
How do you get back out the forest when there isn't a trail? Meet Barrie Brusila. Barrie is a forester, which is the science and job of managing forests. She also runs her own consulting business called Mid-Maine Forestry. It is Barrie's job to not only maintain forests in earth friendly ways for the future but to restore and protect old forests. In earlier years Barrie worked for the U.S. Forest Service. Barrie will show us how to read a map, use a compass and help us identify trees and perform low impact forestry. Location: The Arboretum, Colby College-- Mayflower Hill, Waterville
April 25: Rugged Ruggers
Ever wonder what you get when you cross soccer with football? Come find out from the Colby Women's Rugby team. We'll learn the game, the terms, and what it takes to be a female rugger! Location: Rugby Field, Colby College-- Mayflower Hill, Waterville
May 9: More Than a Molehill
Meet Sergeant Bethanie Mazzaro, member of the Maine Army National Guard, who will teach us the basics of rock climbing and belaying techniques as well as take us through a number of team building challenges and an inflatable obstacle course. Location: Castonguay Square, 14 Common St., Waterville
